Looking through the app store on your smart device can be overwhelming. There is an abundance of apps to choose from. To make this process a little easier, I’m going to share a few of my favorite apps that have been helpful to me.

A fun new addition to my phone is the “Finch” app. This self-care app is designed to help the user grow. The purpose of the app is to take care of a friendly bird, but in order to care for the bird, you must complete daily self-care exercises. It is very customizable and easy to use. I’ve found that it’s a really fun way to take care of my mind.

Another self-care app that I have found useful is called “Insight Timer.” This app has thousands of meditations that are available for free. Meditation helps me to manage stress, stay present, and be mindful. “Insight Timer” makes meditation accessible and easy. It’s been a free way to better myself. I would absolutely recommend this app.

Social media has certainly taken the world by storm, but the app “Be Real” is completely different from anything I’ve used before. Once you have your account set up, a notification will go off at a random point throughout the day. You then have 2 minutes to take a picture of what’s in front of you as well as a selfie. Once you have taken the picture, you are able to see what your friends are up to. This app is an entertaining way to keep up with friends.

With gas prices skyrocketing, I’ve been using the app “Gas Buddy” more than ever. This app allows the user to view all the prices of gas per gallon at gas stations in their surrounding area. This has been super helpful for me because I’m able to see the least expensive station to get gas. The app works by users reporting gas prices when they pass by gas stations. This app is totally worth the download.

Of course, this wouldn’t be a Library blog without mentioning books in some form! My favorite app to read eBooks, listen to eAudiobooks, watch movies, and listen to music is “Hoopla.” This is an app that can download media for a certain amount of time—it’s basically like checking out items from an eLibrary. If you have a full service Library card with the Charlotte Community Library, you have full access to the app and all the books and media that comes with it.

I am always looking for new ways to learn, and the “Mango” app is great for exploring new languages! This app allows users to learn a new language digitally. It is a great option if you are looking for an inexpensive way to learn a language. Unlike an in-person language class, you are able to log on at any point in the day—this kind of flexibility was a big win for me. In addition, “Mango” is completely free if you have a full service Library card at the Charlotte Community Library. Bonus!

Navigating technology and apps can be difficult and overwhelming because of the countless options to choose from. I hope that this guide was able to recommend a couple of apps that are able to help you in your day-to-day life. Please contact the Library if you have any questions about the apps the Library provides.
