The Charlotte Community Library sailed through this summer with its annual Summer Reading Program. Over 100 adults and 262 young people participated in the reading challenge with around 1,392 individuals participating in this year’s in-person programs and to-go craft kits.
Adults were challenged to read 12 books per log. Three different logs were available for a total of 36 books read, if completed. All together, they read 468 books.
Charlotte youth were challenged to descend all five zones of the ocean. Each zone had its own log that required participants to read a certain number of books or half-hours. A total of 646 logs were turned in, for a total of 29,740 books or half-hours read.
Adults who read a minimum of 12 books were entered into a grand prize drawing of their choice. These prizes included a HOP Passport, Octopus Mug with Kraken Coffee, and a $60 voucher to Escapology. Youth who reached the Twilight, Midnight and Abyss zones were entered in a grand drawing of their choice, including a jellyfish piñata, a Hexbug Battlebots arena, and a $100 gift card to their favorite Charlotte business.
We had an extra reading challenge for students. Anyone who finished the final reading log zone, the Trenches, was entered into a drawing for a special grand prize. We had 33 students complete the Trenches challenge. These readers all read for 180 hours or 360 books. The winner, Ava T., received a $100 gift card to Barnes & Noble and a pair of “Oceans of Possibilities” socks.

The Library offered several in-person programs, including ones held at Oak Park and with the Eaton Theatre. Around 1,194 people attended these 35 events. Over 120 craft kits-to-go were supplied for kids and adults.
A big THANK YOU goes out to local Charlotte businesses who sponsored or helped with the program: Biggby, Culver’s, Eaton Theatre, Friends of the Charlotte Community Library, McDonald’s, Mrs. Mary Lee and the late Dr. Don Falik, Taco Bell, and Quality Dairy. Next time you stop in at one of these businesses, let them know how much you appreciate them being a supporter of our community’s Summer Reading Program.
