The Charlotte Community Library provides more than reading materials. It provides experiences. One way it does so is by providing unique things to check out or to enjoy while visiting the Library. Some libraries refer to this type of collection as a “Library of Things;” the Charlotte Community Library declares it just a part of its experiential offerings. The Library was able to add more to this collection recently because of both memorial contributions and donations.
The Library welcomes memorial contributions as a way to honor a beloved one. Library staff carefully select items and/or programs to celebrate the person’s life. For instance, the Library recently purchased two American Girl Dolls for visitors to enjoy while at the Library. Purchased in memory of Angie Pickett because she loved the American Girls, the Library was able to honor her interests and share that with the community. Another recent memorial honored the life of Jean Hopkins and her patronage of the Library with a tree dollhouse for the children’s room. The Library was also able to update its interior to provide a better experience when using the study carrels by purchasing window blinds. These were purchased through a bequest the Friends of the Charlotte Community Library handle.

The Optimist Club annually gives the Library a contribution to memorialize the deceased members of their Club. The Library uses these donations to purchase replacement copies of beloved youth books such as the series Warriors and Shiloh, or to purchase blockbuster series that are new to the Library, such as Bad Kitty and Bad Guys. By doing so, the memory of these members will always be on the forefront of our community’s minds.
Donations are also gladly accepted and used to help with our collection or programs and services. Whether “just because” or for a specific reason, the Library tries to honor the giver’s intent. For years, the Falik family (Mary Lee and the late Dr. Don) have donated money to purchase new books as well as to assist in children’s programming. Because of their continued generous donations, this summer the Library will be able to provide more youth programming than normal.
The Library also pursues grants to help bolster its experiential collection. Grants received this past year have helped the Library provide new STEM kits and hot spots as well install the EV chargers and hitching post.
