As a second year college student, I have learned that using my resources is a practice that can bring great success. So far, all of my classes have been online, which means I haven’t been on my college campus very much. I quickly realized in my first semester that I was missing out on a lot of student resources. Luckily, I live close to the Charlotte Community Library! This Library has provided me with a great deal of resources that have aided me in my success as a student.
Study Space
One of the most helpful features of this Library is its quiet study spaces. I love coming here, even on my days off, to study at the back desks or tables near the stacks. I find that I finish so much more of my work because I focus better in a different environment than my home. I’m also held accountable because I don’t want to be seen slacking off in front of other library patrons!
Extra Supports
Because I don’t usually want to drive to my college campus to find books that help me study for classes, I frequently check my library first. For example, I checked out a book on film, The Film Book: a Complete Guide to the World of Film, in order to dive deeper into the realm of cinema for my World Cinema class. I was able to learn a lot about different directors, cultures, and genres. I ended up getting an A in the class, so if that doesn’t convince you to use the library for school resources, I don’t know what will!
Tech Services
The Library also has many practical services that have aided me throughout my college and high school years. Using the library’s WiFi has allowed me to do my online work when my personal WiFi has gone out. The Library also recently purchased WiFi Hotspots that can be checked out. I used one of the hotspots when I needed to do a quiz when my WiFi went out. The Library’s printing services have also helped me to study and to print out pages from my online textbook.
eResources
Additionally, the Library offers an online service called Tutor.com, and although I’ve never used the website, it can be extremely helpful for a lot of students. This online service is a website where students can get help with homework, test prep, and essay writing. This service is free of charge to library card holders with full library service. However, if one does not have a library card, Michigan eLibrary (MeL) is a great option for web research. Under the eResources tab on mel.org, the “Browse all Resources” tab has a multitude of links that can help with research for papers and assignments. https://mel.org/libraries/general
I am so thankful that I’ve had access to these resources—they have absolutely helped me succeed in college. Even when I’m out of college, I will still be using some of these services in my professional life. This Library is a wonderful place for research and academics, and I highly encourage any students to come and visit!
