Charlotte Community Library told some tales and learned about tails this summer with its annual Summer Reading Program. 93 adults and 233 young people participated in the reading challenge portion and around 1,100 individual participated in its in-person programs or to-go kits.

Adults were challenged to read 40 hours. All together they read for 2,500 hours. Kids, birth to in preschool, were challenged to read 90 books each. They read a total of 2,893 books. Kids entering kindergarten to 12th grade were challenged to read for 40 hours and read for a total of 4,068 hours.

Adults who read at least 25 hours were entered into a grand prize drawing of their choice. These prizes included tickets to the MI Country Music Hall of Fame event and a number of gift cards to local businesses. Youth who read at least 60 books or 1,200 minutes were entered in a grand drawing of their choice, including a hoverboard, a piñata, and a number of thematic gift baskets which had gift cards.

We had an extra reading challenge for students. The top readers in each grade level were entered into a random drawing. The winner, Dimitri X., received a $100 gift card to Meijer.

Through the Library’s Wandoo account, it offered the opportunity of participating in extra challenges they could do at home. Students completed 2,512 challenges and adults completed 279. Those who did at least 5 challenges were put into drawing for gift cards.

The Library offered a number of in-person programs, including ones held at Oak Park and with Eaton Theatre. Around 1,100 attended these 40 events. Over 100 craft kits-to-go were supplied for kids and adults.

A pet show which Soldan’s Pet Supplies sponsored was held at the Library this summer. 36 pets were entered in June and 99 folks voted for their favorite pets in different categories in July when they visited the library.
